API 620 question ?

API 620 question ?

API 620 question ?

(OP)
API 620
paragraph 5.5.4.5
this is the case with one unit force is tensile and the other is compressive.
API says that one has to compute the tensile stress and THEN follow the rest of the procedure
by using for instance figure 5.1 for detemining the N value...etc

My question is :

1/-do we have to include BEFORHAND the joint efficiency E in this N, I mean N define N as =( joint efficiency as per table 5-2) * actual tensile stress / ( allowable tensile stress as per table 5-1)

2/-or do we have to check actual stress  to determine N as equal to actual tensile stress / ( allowable tensile stress as per table 5-1)
and then determine N = actual tensile stress / ( allowable tensile stress as per table 5-1)
and check AFTERWARD  if  N <  E otherways use a thicker wall
My interpretation goes for the later :  determine N and then check if N < E

RE: API 620 question ?

I think the second method is what is intended.
