flow rate query.

flow rate query.

flow rate query.

(OP)
I am trying to design a oil water separator and need to figure out a worst case concentration for a spill of 20,000 gallons of No. 6 oil say within a time of 4 hours. This is mixed with a peak flow of 7.5 MGD. I was able to do the following:
20000 gallons/hour = 5000 gallons/hour and 7.5 MGD is almost 100,000 gallons/hour.
To calculate the concentration in ppmv :

(5000/105000)*10^6 = 47620 ppmv.

How can I convert this above value into mg/l or a mass based flow rate.

Other information. Specific Gravity of No.6 oil  = 0.98.

Density of Wastewater = 980 kg/m3.

Any help is appreciated or any texts that can be of use will also be useful.

Thanks in advance.

RE: flow rate query.

What is this "MGD" units?  I think it should be million gallons per day, but when I divide by 24 hours I get 215,500 gallons per hour, which does not equal what you say you are getting, 100,000 gph.

That mistake should be pretty easy for an engineer to catch himself and the rest is just multiplying the numbers you already have.

Are you doing homework here, or what?

i m sorry for the typo but the flow rate is actually 2.41 MGD which works out to be 100,416 gallons/hour. Also, 7.5 MGD works out to be 312,500 gallons per hour.
Can someone give me some information on volumetric flow rates and mass flow rates when it involves wastewater.
I think it is possible to calculate the concentration of air using temperature, pressure and molecular weight. Is there a similar relation for flow rates for wastewater.

thanks...

RE: flow rate query.

Mass flowrate = Volumetric flowrate * Density
or
Mass flowrate = Volumetric flowrate * SG * Density of water.
Density of Water = 62.4 pcf

RE: flow rate query.

If the question has been answered, what were the units used and what is the answer?
