Helical pattern?

Helical pattern?

Helical pattern?

(OP)
Helical spring shape geometry I need to show a change in the profile (finned tube).
is there a feature that will allow me do create this.

Like the curve driven pattern but in 3d.
Thanks

RE: Helical pattern?

Make a loft that would be a way of changing your profile midstream.

Are you familiar with a finned tube?, that’s what I’m trying to create, http://www.fintube.com/ like the tube here,
Thanks

RE: Helical pattern?

I really don't see what you're trying to do here.  All I see at that website are either "stacks" of plates on a tube or a coil around a tube.  What do you mean by "change in profile"?

RE: Helical pattern?

most of it does not look like its a helix at all, most of it looks patterned... however you know your product better then I do. Do understand using a helix is complex geometry and the bigger you make your helix to slower your PC will run with complex geometry.

As for making a sweep, you can make different shapes if you make multiple helixes, but you will have to make as bunch of separate sweeps. so the question is what you exactly want. the link provides us with many different types... what one are you wanting to know about in thise question?

Sorry if I have not been to clear with my description, the last thing I want to do is waste anyone’s time!

I can easy model a helix (spring shape) and I can easily model a straight tube with rings around it like ( http://www.fintube.com/stamped.htm#stamped ) but I need to show my helix (spring) with these rings.

Thanks

RE: Helical pattern?

I believe he is trying to do the helical wound like the Edge Tension except that the profile of the fin needs to change at some point in the helix.  I'm not sure, someone else may be more help but I think it will require several features if that is what you are wanting to do.  You will probably need to do a helical sweep of the first profile, then do a loft between that profile and the next, then finish with a sweep of the 2nd profile.

RE: Helical pattern?

Ah, so you want to model a bunch of stacked disks on a tube that's been bent into a helical coil?

RE: Helical pattern?

(OP)
you got it.........why couldn't i explain it so simply.
apologies!

RE: Helical pattern?

Curve Driven pattern of the plate using the helix of the tube as the curve. Curve driven pattern works in 3d in 2006 and later.

the only problem here is that i dont run SW2006 i'm on 2005, i was trying to use that command but it dosen't like the helix

RE: Helical pattern?

You could create the Helix then convert it using a 3DSketch. It would make it a spline then you could probably use Curve driven pattern.

RE: Helical pattern?

I think his problem is 2005 only allows curve driven patterns in 2d. Support for 3d curve patterns came in 2006.

Is upgrading an option? 2006 is nearing it's last sservice pack and is fairly stable.

RE: Helical pattern?

(OP)
some great examples, but just one more thing please, on the baseball model the curve pattern is related to a spline sketch (spline2@3dsketch), I don’t follow where this is from i can only see the 3dsketch1. Is the a way of converting a 3d sketch into a spine (like above), as an error message pings up saying selected curve is not a planar curve.

RE: Helical pattern?

The spline is created from the split line.... Create the
split line, open a 3d sketch, click on split line, then click on convert entities. A point was also added in the
3D sketch for the plane creation.

RE: Helical pattern?

Whoops, not much help that was...seeing the same problem.

RE: Helical pattern?

Apparently you have to show the 3d sketch, then select it in the graphics window...not the feature manager...

RE: Helical pattern?

(OP)
Great I can now create a curve driven pattern, cant quite get the result i would like but I’m close!
It's hard, I’m the only user of SW in the company I work for, so a big thanks to the people here!

RE: Helical pattern?

This is what I need to do too. However, I'm struggling to convert the helix to 3d Sketch. Once it's a spline I'm sure that the pattern to curve in SW2005 will do what I need.

RE: Helical pattern?

OK I've now solved this by reading the instrcutions above by dutch7777! Thank you. Is there any way to create the helix around a curve rather than a straight helix? Thanks. Max
