Crazy material specified

(OP)
Hello all,

I have a customer who has specified material forging AISI4340 for a component that is rectangular in section 1.5" x 3.0" rectangular section. I, more exactly my sub contract machining supplier, cannot track down material to suit this job. This material as far as we can tell is only available in large diameters and not readily available at that. The nearest we have come is cutting bits out of a 1" thick 10" diameter ring. My question is, there must be a more sensible material spec for a plate spec that has the same chemical and physical properties! Can anyone advise please?

Regards

RE: Crazy material specified

Plastic injection moulds are made from materials such as 4340 - any supplier of injection mould steels will be able to supply blocks cut to size if your length isn't too long.
