(OP)
I am currently designing an elevator and machine room for a three story building.  The machine room will have a new panel that powers the new elevator and all the necessary lighting and power for the machine room, elevator cab, and elevator pit.  I have a 100A/3p disconnect switch for the elevator motor, but I am confused as to the design for the elevator shunt trip. Is an enclosed circuit breaker with shunt trip in the electrical panel all that is needed?  Any knowledge on the subject will help or any reference as to where to learn more on this topic.  Thank you!

RE: elevator

Check with you state requirements, some states don't require shunt trips.

Also check the elevator submittal electrical drawings they usually have all the requirements or check with the elevator company rep.

A gfci is usually required on the cab circuit(two circuit for the cab), the outlet in the shaft and the light in the shaft. I use a cast box with receptacle cover for the outlet and a physically protected light. A disconnect for the cab circuits in the machine room.

The machine room should be within 50 ft of the shaft (hydraulic system). A tel outlet in the machine room and also check your smoke detector requirements one in the shaft top and at each level at the elevator door entry.

That is what is required when I do designs. Check with your AHJ.

RE: elevator

If a shunt trip is required, it should be provided  in the elevator motor branch circuit breaker in the panelboard.

As for resource ASME A17.1 is the widely adopted Elevator Code by states in the USA. Goole search and you will have plethora of information. You need to focus on electrical requirements in those codes.

As usual refer to our local and state building codes for any amendments.
