Question on Modeling . Sketch over a cylindrical surface....
(OP)
Is it poosible to sketch over a cylindrical surface in solidworks? My problem is, I have a part that looks like a circular belt in top view, and the whole part seems to be deformed over a cylinder when viewed from side Imagine a circular belt placed over a cylinder). How can i model these kind of parts?
Any suggestions would be helpful.

RE: Question on Modeling . Sketch over a cylindrical surface....
1) Draw a shaft with the OD of the thicker portion and the length of the longer portion.
2) select the face on one end and use it as the sketch plane.
3) convert the OD to lines and either offset it the distance to the inner shaft or draw a circle centered on the face with the proper diameter for the OD of the smaller shaft.
4) Extrude cut to the edge of the "belt"
5) Repeat on other end.
An easier method:
1) use one of the global planes as the sketch plane.
2) draw a circle the diameter of one of the shafts
3) use a "midplane" extrusion to get the length that you need
4) repeat using other diamter
Yet another option (perhaps even easier)
1) sketch 1/2 of the cross section.
2) draw a construction line down the centerline of the shaft (this should connect the ends that were cut by the "1/2" and should close the section).
3) revolve the section
NOTE: If the shafts are not solid, just make sure you close the section appropriately.
I'm sure there is at least one other way.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I am trying a few things to do this. I will try to post an image if this doesnt workout.
Thanks

You can also use the wrap feature to wrap a sketch around a cylinder.

RE: Question on Modeling . Sketch over a cylindrical surface....
Thank you. Those are exactly the features i needed. Both of them worked. Infact, using WRAP feature is the easiest way to get my job done.
Before i was trying a circuitous way of using some boolean operations on solids and then converting the resultant egdes to curves etc.
Thanks for the suggestion.
