RE: Masonry Design

A great start is the classic Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook by Amrhein published by the Masonry Institute of America 5th edition.  It is not updated anymore and does not follow the current IBC 2006 or ACI 530, but the principles of design and analysis are excellent.

RE: Masonry Design

I like "Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures" by Narendra Taly, Ph.D,P.E. Published by McGraw Hill. It has all of the things you mentioned plus many more. It especially helped me during my first encounters with masonry because it explains the dimensions and reinforcing requirements very well.

RE: Masonry Design

Aueng06:  I have that reference as well.  It is excellent and I use it often.

Thanks, I'll take in consideration both books, I think I'll buy the second ("Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures" by Narendra Taly, Ph.D,P.E.), If you tell me that will be more practical for begginers. I've been seen on Internet these Books of Masonry:

1- "Simplified Design of Masonry Structures"
    by James Ambrose
2- "Reinforced Masonry Design"
Robert R. Schneider, Walter L. Dickey

Do you have any reference?
Thanks for you help

RE: Masonry Design

If you are using the ACI 530 code, look for the Masonry Designer's Guide by The Masonry Society.

RE: Masonry Design

The ACI 530 and the Masonry Designers guide are the two best documents for concrete masonry design.

There are hundreds of high quality masonry structures built internationally using these documents as guides with some minor variations made for local materials and practices.

In the Sao Paulo, Brazil area alone there are hundreds of 15 to 21 story loadbearing apartment buildings built using 6" loadbearing concrete masonry walls. The advanced engineering and construction practices made these possible.
