Steam Turbine Bypass Valves (PRV's)

Steam Turbine Bypass Valves (PRV's)

When our back-pressure turbine is down, we must send the HP steam from our boiler (1315 psig, 905 F) through two steam conditioning valves to feed the two steam headers to the plant.  One steam header operates at 145 psig/380 F and the other at 280 psig/ 480 F.

We are using BTG (now CCI) brand valves but are dissatisfied with their performance and durability.  I want to know what others with a similar process are using for this service.  Any information you can provide is appreciated.

RE: Steam Turbine Bypass Valves (PRV's)

CCI sells 2 other types of valves besides BTG. The Sulzer valves are the highest quality bypass valves, espescially suitable for load rejection/ fast transients, tight shutoff, great for normally closed applications.

The CCI "Self drag" valves are best suited for continuous service with very low noise, and less suited for fast transients and tend to leak like a sieve if they are normally supposed to be closed- they are better suited for normally open service.

There are other vendors- Fisher also sells a forged angle valve ( mfr'd near Atlanta , Ga) that has some similarities to the Sulzer valve.

The Fisher valve is also known as "Con-Tek".

Valtek and Leslie also both make steam-conditioning/Desuperheater valve assemblies.

Leslie's is based on their Aeroflow valve discharging into a fabricated bell with spray nozzles.

I don't know much about Valtek's but it would be based on their Mark1 with Noise-reduction trim.

Copes Vulcan used to be tops in this application, but I can't say if they still have a product that will suffice.

I used them in a turbine by pass application many years ago from 1800 down to 165 and it did a good job.
