Shaft Grounding Brush

Shaft Grounding Brush

Shaft Grounding Brush

(OP)
I am building a fan for use in an explosive environement and I need a grounding brush for the shaft to prevent any sparks.  Can anyone here point me in the right direction.  I found the following links in an earlier post on this forum, but I think these brushes are overkill for what I am doing.  I would appreciate your opinions on the matter.

40 Hp AC motor direct coupling (I am not using a VFD)
1750 RPM
1 15/16 shaft diameter

RE: Shaft Grounding Brush

Not using a VFD is good. Both of the links are pointing to useful brushes. The AEGIS is working around all the shaft perimeter, which may be an advantage.

I am going to try one on a larger motor this week or next.

RE: Shaft Grounding Brush

Just a word of caution on putting equipment in explosive environment - you are potentially taking on virtually unlimited liability if there is ever an explosion in this area.

Does any shaft brush supplier warrant that their equipment is suitable for an explosive environment?

It's not clear from your post, but if you are manufacturing this blower for sale to someone else, you might want to decide if it's worth the risk.

If this is an in-house project, you can ignore this post probably (just like everyone else looking around)

RE: Shaft Grounding Brush

Can we assume you are using an explosion proof motor? Ask the motor manufacturer whether or not using shaft brushes will invalidate their certification.

The two links I showed aren't for explosive environments or static discharge.  Aegis is specifically for VFD imposed currents on a motor shaft.  Sohre states they are for "stray shaft currents."  I am only worried about preventing static electricity from forming arc.  I don't foresee any actual currents running through the shaft.  That's why I am hesitant of using either one.

RE: Shaft Grounding Brush

You must let the motor manufacturer lead the way on this one.  They are responsible for the integrity of the XP label on the motor and should be in charge of any modifications.
