Info request for dredging regulations and personal experiences

(OP)
I am at the beginning of writing my thesis on the use of Dredging Commitees to create a dredging plan. I am looking for anyone's input on their personal experience with regulations, where the best place to gather information about dredging (already looking into the ACOE), current deepening projects, and if anyone has been involved in the dredge planning process with gov'tal organizations, etc.

I can be emailed directly at angusmacg@yahoo.com or you can reply to this post. I would appreciate any guidance and comments.

Thank you

RE: Info request for dredging regulations and personal experiences

Looks great for Thesis... WEDA.COM (or ORG) World Dredging Association, Western Dredging Association. Of course the USACE especially in VICKSBURG, MS (WES). Texas A&M University. We at MMS do work with offshroe sand and gravel resources whcih are often dredgable.

I too am writing my thesis.  I am looking for information regarding mitigation of dredging projects on the West Coast.  If anyone has any information how I could get these documents it would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Info request for dredging regulations and personal experiences

my company has been involved with extensive inland (freshwater) for dredging 10 years.  in new jersey the state regulators have been extensively involved with marine dredging.  nj is in the infancy stages of dealing with inland dredging.  however, it is anticipated that lakes will be handled in a similar fashion as the marine work.

if you go call the njdep land use regulation program at 609-292-0060 they can be helpful.

several new jersey counties are also in the process of forming committees to determine the best disposal options for inland dredging.

i would also be interested in hearing more about your thesis.

i can be reached at ggoll@princetonhydro.com

Nicks/Ang'mac,
This will to all intents not be for you, but can help the forum - you've completed your projects I would imagine,
The basic issue about dredging is relocation of sea bed material for transport access or swamp development construction.
from an environmentally sensitive area point of view, ESA concerns over dredging centre around
* loss of spawning grounds for benthic fauna
* turbidity issues where the water course forms a principal source of drinking water
* loss of original ecosystem eg by not allowing tidal inundation of swamp low lands during low tides
* change in geo-morphology of the area, changed drainage patterns
* development of localised arid spots through a process of acidification essentially deriving from oxidation of the sulphate ions on exposure to atmosphere
* acceleration of wave wash action on the shoreline caused by a deepening effect(within dredged areas) and complex vortex forces emanating around the shoreline from hydraulic action
* issues of pollution due to poor house keeping practices are isolated.

Some of effects are temporary and I can say tell you that in ESA areas a lot of the alleged concerns bear from lack of knowledge about dredging processes.
In all, the onus is on the dredge compay to show reasonable care in carrying out dredge works.

Numerous dredging projects occur in teh San Francisco Bay.  Related to dredging committes and plans, check out the Long Term Managment Strategy for dredge disposal prepared by resource agencies with a stake:

I believe there is a lot of similar informaiton available for the Puget SOudn area.
