Delete Locked Parameters

Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hi all-

I need to remove some parameters form a customer Pro/Engineer wildfire part that I recieved.  However, the parameters show "Locked" under the Access column in Tools->Parameters... dialog box.  This is not allowing me to delete (or change) these parameters.  My guess is they are not meant to be removed (or changed), however, these parameters are causing problems with our data management system and need to be removed.

Does anybody know of a work around for this problem?

Thanks.

If it is a user defined parameter, it might be locked because its value is set in a relation. Try editing relations to check this.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

With the new parameters UI, you cannot remove locked parameters.
There is a way to remove them that involves the old parameter UI and maybe some other config.pro setting.
I just tried the old UI with a part while disconnected from PDMLink and I could not delete the locked parameters. I have done this, but it was an earlier build of WF2.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

From PTC:

Locked—Locked access means that the parameters were created by an "external application" (Data Management System, Analysis Features, Relations, Pro/PROGRAM or Family Tables). Locked parameters can only be modified from within the external application.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Right,"They can only be modified from within the external application", but they can be deleted under the right conditions.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hi all-

Thanks. I kinda thought it was not possible either.  I have another question though.  Does anybody know how to prevent Windchill from adding these parameters upon download of the part?  I realize this is a Pro/Engineer forum but I'd thought I'd ask it here anyways since it may be helpful.

Thanks.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

To figure out where these parameters are set, make sure you can see the "Source" column in the parameter editor (wf2+).

This will tell you where the parameter comes from, and may help you sniff out where you need to go to delete it.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey justkeepgiviner,

The sources listed are all "Windchill" parameters.  However, I cannot return to this application since it is not at our site.

On a side note, I guess it was possible to remove parameters (locked or unlocked) by backing up the part(s), assy(s),...etc. (via File->Backup...) but only in PRE-WILDIFRE versions.

Anybody got any ideas for Wildfire versions (1.0+)?

Thanks.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Adam,

There is a way, but it's a bit painful......
Open the part, and create a User Defined Feature of every feature after the default datum planes & CSYS.
Now create a new part and insert the UDF, referencing the same default datum planes.
The model is exactly the same, and no Windchill parameters.

This technique can be quite useful for other applications, i.e. how can I convert a model created in Student Version to Commercial Version.....
but if PTC find out, they'll find a way of blocking it........!!!

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey JohnAndrews-

Thanks.  It is sort of messy, but its the best suggestion I have heard as of yet.

Anybody got an easier way though?

I appreciate it JohnAndrews.

Thanks.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Steve - the template idea sounds good, but unfortunately doesn't work. All the Windchill and other parameters are passed over to the new part, and cannot be deleted.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Another option is to use an inheritance feature - Insert - Shared Data - Inheritance from Other Model

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Adam,

Can you share with us one of these famous parts?

-Hora

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey Hora,

Yeah I can share one of the parts.  I will use my old shcool account to host this link.  Get this part at the following address.

Thanks for your interest in resolving this issue.

"...but if PTC find out, they'll find a way of blocking it........!!!"

Yeah... They fixed this in Wildfire...

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey JohnAndrews-

Thanks.  This is yet another (easier) way to remove these parameters.  I appreciate it.

Thanks.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Adam, I see your parts are made in Wildfire and I cannot open here. Still on 2001. But I remember one thing from the past. If you deal with components taken from Intralink or Windchild database, you will get some system parameters like PDMREV, PDMREL and so on, which cannot be deleted even if you alter the header of the file. The only way to reset them is just a simple back-up. Are you dealing with these parameters? Did you try to make a back-up of the parts?

-Hora

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey Hora,

Yeah I remember backing up the parts in 2001i to get rid of the locked parameters.  However, in the Wildfire releases, it appears to be no longer possible to get rid of the locked parameters by backing up the parts. Thanks for the reply though.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Adam,

Thanks for info. I will try to find a Wildfire license I will take a look at those parameters. Can you tell me if the paramets you have touble are system paramaters? Sorry for the repetetive "parameters"

-Hora

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey Hora,

Well, I think the exact name for the parameters (from the PTC support documentation) is "Intralink system paramters" which are set and locked by Intralink upon the part entering the system.  Tell me if this doesn't answer your question.

Btw, these parts were made in Wildfire 2.0 (I don't have any other licenses anymore).  If you really need a Wildifre example part I can probably cook one up.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Adam,

Then must be the PDMREV, PDMREL, etc. I will keep you in touch.

A back-up outside Intralink should clear them. Give it a try.
See you tomorrow.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Adam and Steve,

Both you are right. I tried too with a 2001 file and, indeed the back-up does not reset the attributes. That's the bad news. The good news is that SAVE AS does!

So, instead a back-up, please perform a SAVE AS. Not part by part, but TOP level assembly. Use the template and the suffix to give them the new names, ex:"_NEW".

Now the tricky part: Remove all components from memory, erase memory, load the newley named assembly, and do again a save as in other folder using this the template and this syntax: "*_NEW" = "*". In this way, all components will be renamed as the originals. And all sytem attributes will be reseted.

Good luck,

-Hora

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Hi Steve,

No I don't have WF. We are still on Pro2001 (part time) Catia became the major CAD here  sad. I took an assembly from Intralink and I did a save as operation. And it worked. But yesterday I found a forum where someoane asked if  a ProToolkit application can delete the Windchill parameters, because he tried in many ways without success. If we deal with Winchill parameters than maybe is not possible to delete them thru ProE.

By the way can you give me the name of these parameters of the Adam's part?

And another thing: Can you take an Intralink part and perform a save as operation? At least we can see if Intralink parameters can be deleted in WF.

Thanks a lot for keeping me in touch. Nasty problem we have here.

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

(OP)
Hey guys,

Hora - I will do one better (I hope this works). I put a screenshot of the parameters again on my old school accnt.  I cannot give a screenshot here because the picture is larger than 400 pixels square.  I guess the parameters are Windchill system parameters, but the important thing is the parameters are locked and cannot be removed not where they can from as I have no access to Windchill or Intralink.

Heres the link:

Thanks for all your help.  I really appreciate it.

-Adam J. Cook

RE: Delete Locked Parameters

Thanks Adam,

Indeed these are Windchill parameters. Still looking for a solution to kill them. I'm wondering if ProToolkit let me to access these parameters. I will check the documentation and let you know.
