Accurate Motor Suggestions

(OP)
I am researching ways to control the elevation and azimuth position of an antenna with the highest accuracy as possible.  I am considering stepper motors and brushless motors...is there anything else I have missed?

RE: Accurate Motor Suggestions

Maybe add some encoders to pull some voltage from to reduce backlash and overshoot?

How would an encoder help to reduce the backlash in the system?  I know encoders are used to control the position of the motor.  I am still learning about how all these different types of motors work, so any insight is definately appreciated.

RE: Accurate Motor Suggestions

MadMango meant to use feedback from the encoder to compensate for any backlash. Then you could use (in principle) any motor and gearbox that has enough torque for the job. In this case it's probably worth having a look at what is used in similar applications, eg astronomical telescopes, or robots.

I bet I'd end up using brushed DC motors driving through worm gears, using rotary pots for the feedback loop.
