Request for help finding a 1/4-32 or 1/4-40 screw, or threaded rod

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone please tell me where I can find some 1/4-32 or 1/4-40 screws about 1.8" long. I can cut down a longer screw. I don't need a head on the screw, so I could cut the head off, or use threaded rod stock. Cutting the head off the screw may be cheaper.

I'm going to drill a hole through the screw at one end and use it as an adjustable spring anchor. Due to space limitations, I need to use a small pattern hex nut (maximum 5/16" flat to flat) such as the Part # 91862A516 from www.mcmaster.com. This nut is 1/4-32 NEF thread. They also make a 1/4-40 nut at slightly more cost.

I could not find a 5/16" hex nut to work on a regular 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 screw, so that's why I need to find a 1/4-32 or 1/4-40 screw. If I could find a 5/16" hex nut to work with a 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 screw, that would also solve my problems since 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 screws are more easy to find.

I would appreciate any help  anyone can provide with finding a source for the screws, or any feedback.

Thanks for your help.
John

Hi byrdj,

Thanks for your reply. I tried to google for threaded rod but had no luck finding a 1/4-32 or 1/4-40 thread. Same with stock screws.

A 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 screw is easy to find, but then I need a nut that is no more than 5/16" flat to flat, and has a 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 thread. This would eliminate my need for the 1/4-32 or 1/4-40 rod or screw.

Thanks again,
John

It may be easier to use 1/4-20 hardware and either modify a standard nut, or make the nut that you need from scratch.

You can buy 1/4-32 threading dies, and 1/4" round stock, from McMaster-Carr among other sources, and thread your own rod.

Machine shop, make your own from bar stock.

This is a specialty item not typically carried by the fastener industry, cost/demand sort of argument.
