Ties/Connectors

(OP)
Do you recommend Simpson ties/connectors?  How about USP?  Which is the best?

Thank you for your help.

RE: Ties/Connectors

I've been to the Simpson's free seminars and they do a great job in teaching the correct way to specify and use their connectors. They go over a lot of design information: code requirements, loading conditions, nail usage, field inspection etc.

I always spec. the Simpson connectors because they have such a complete line and do such a good job of keeping up with new developments.  They also have Connector Selector software to help find the right connector; you imput the loads, the type of connection members and they output a list of connnectors based on the most cost effective one.

RE: Ties/Connectors

I look at them as being pretty much the same.  USP has a connector almost exactly the same or stronger for most everything that Simpson has.  Simpson is the Kleenex, Xerox, TrussJoist, etc. of the connector world, ie. they're the namebrand people know most.  You're probably best of specifying  "or equal" anyway to give the contractor some leeway either way.

RE: Ties/Connectors

I use the Simpson catalog for plan specifications,
but add 'or USP equivilent/better'
The builder can then make a cost-value decision.
USP does have a .DWG 'equivilent table' available.

RE: Ties/Connectors

I am an engineer who works for a company who at one time sold Simpson products, then USP and now Simpson again.

As an engineer I prefer Simpson products, however USP has some good products that Simpson doesn't carry.  The reason I prefer Simpson is because I feel they are very devoted to the commercial market.  I've always felt that USP focused more on the residental market.

RE: Ties/Connectors

One area where I found some difference in product line is in uplift conditions found in coastal areas due to wind loading. The hanger choices for severe uplift conditions in the USP catalog were better IMO.

RE: Ties/Connectors

I would also consider availability in your area.  I would suspect Simpson is available most all locations, not sure about USP may not.  I just recently requested and received a USP reference binder and noticed they actually reference Simpson product numbers beside their comparable connectors which I have found handy.
