How good is Sharepoint?

How good is Sharepoint?

We are in the process of evaluating different PDM software.  Just how good and stable is Sharepoint with the handling and collaboration of CAD information?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

RE: How good is Sharepoint?

Depends on what you want to do.

Sharepoint/Insight is set up to be a departmental document control system.  If you plan on using it for company wide data management, look elsewhere.  Since you're running v18, you may want to give Team Center Express a look.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your response. Lets say I only want to manage design data and I want to present this information in a simple manner to other departments.

RE: How good is Sharepoint?

If you ONLY want to manage Solid Edge data (although some other can be thrown into the mix),
If ONLY your department is going to be authoring the data and maintains control of the Sharepoint database,
If you ONLY want to provide others with the ability to view your Solid Edge data through a web-type interface,
then Sharepoint/Insight will work for you.

But, if you want other departments to view in-process work, and have approval authority, and be a part of the work flow, then Insight will probably not be the effective tool you're looking for.

If you need a consultant to look at your data and give a good recommendation, I can help further.
