early fire detection systems

early fire detection systems

early fire detection systems

(OP)
I work at a coal fired power plant.  I am looking at installing an early detection system in our cable room and computer room.  I have looked into a few systems and am worried about high maintenance and false alarm frequencies.  I am looking for any success stories with these systems or anyone with any experience in using them.
Thanks.

RE: early fire detection systems

We were involved in the installation of an early warning detection system in a prison that had tubes tied to a special system that sampled the air and could even detect the cables from computers when they got got. The sensitivity can be adjusted so you can have different levels of notification that way you can avoid some false alarms. If your computer room is completely separated from the rest of the facility you might be ok but many of these systems do require special filters that are expensive. You can also use a smoke detection system as an early warning system and work with your AHJ for different levels of alarms also to avoid false alarms. Many systems can now not only implement a verification time but you can program a system so two detectors need to activate before setting off the alarm to evacuate the building. I would avoid the least expensive systems and go with an Analog system that has sensitivity adjustment. Many of the top brand names in Fire will have these panels but try to get a manufactuer that has more than one rep in your area so you can avoid the headaches of having one contractor that can service your system and lock you into pricing forever. Get a system that has non-propriatary equipment. Research on the net and ask several contractors to come in and consult and give you a price. The enviroment that you describe may be a bit of a challenge but it is possbible especially with adjustable heat thresholds etc.....
