preventative maintenance program

preventative maintenance program

Hi All,

At my work I have been asked to come up with mould preventative maintenance program. I was wondering if anyone out there  had info or suggestions for what might be included in a maintenance program?

Thanks in advance to all who take the time to respond.

RE: preventative maintenance program

There are a few computer generated mould maintenance programs available on the market.  You just have to understand that mould maintenance, at least in my opinion should be run via "Shot Counts" and any software you get needs to have that feature.
Since I have been working as a Mould Maker, or Tooling engineer for the last 35 years, I have written my own program.  I just have the shot counts entered each shift, and the program prints out a nice production report and then weekly any "due" work orders or printed out.
It is fairly simple to write a custom maintenance program using Microsoft Access.

RE: preventative maintenance program

Not to sidetrack the thread, but what type of maintenance is performed on molds (not my field)?  Do they resharpen edges, touch up texture, etc.?

toolman801,

Thanks for the response,I to come from a mouldmaking background, having worked on the shop floor for the first 18 years of my career( mills, lathes, grinding, NC programming, fitting etc). About 7 years ago I advanced to tool design.
I have worked predominently in jobbing shops where I have designed and manufactured moulds(aluminum diecast and plastic injection automotive tooling). As such, I have limited experience in actual part production environment.
At my current employer we are in the process of receiving ISO certification and I must develop and document processes for, among other things, a mould maintenance program.
Could you provide the names of the mould maintenance programs you speak of? I am interested in learning more about them. I may in time try to develop my own(though I really have no experience doing that).

macgyver2000,

Mould maintenace could include what you have mentioned(provided the tool is designed to facilitate it). It might also include the greasing of moving components, the replacing of worn or damaged components etc,etc...

I checked out your website... some pretty neat stuff

Thanks, thixoguy
