"Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

"Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

"Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

(OP)
I was quite taken by the following exchange (loosely paraphrased) which I picked up on that well-respected philosophical debating platform "Desperate Housewives".

Son to Mother: "I hate you!"

Mother to Son: "You know, it's a common misconception that "hate" is the opposite of "love". In fact, that's not true. To hate someone means that you still have some sort of emotional involvement with them. The real opposite of "love" is actually "complete indifference"."

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

hmmmm ...
I can see why he said he hates her.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

I've always viewed real LOVE as a condition where you become utterly selfless and focus on the good of others more than yourself.

HATE is truly a SELF-ish thing in that you are focused on your own needs, and the lack of your needs/wants/desires not being met causes an emotional reaction against the good of others.

INDIFFERENCE is also selfish to a degree, in that you simply are not focused on others at all, but probably only yourself.

So I don't see this having anything to do with emotion as the source of the definition, but rather who is the pre-eminent person in your mind who's good is essential.

Unfortunately, modern culture has turned the word LOVE into a gimmee-gimmee-meet-my-needs sort of thing.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

Just two thoughtful aphorisms on the subject:

Quote:

To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance. Oscar Wilde, 1894

Quote:

If pure love exists, free from the dross of other passions, it lies hidden in the depths of our hearts and unknown even to ourselves. La Rochefoucauld, 1665

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

I think Desperate Housewives is a terrible show, and I see they are stealing jokes from good shows.  That exchange is roughly the same as one from Cheers.

Paraphrasing (this was about ten years ago):

Sam: I hate you
Diane: The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference
Sam: Whatever

Cory

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

I recently had a 4 year old nephew visiting us from NYork. He was perhaps influenced by the TV serials and very commonly used phrases like "I love you", "I hate you", "I feel depressed". I was shocked noting the last phrase being used by a 4 year old boy. Perhaps the TV and his friends/parents might have influenced his language. I am sure he does not understand what it is to be depressed.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

"The opposite of love is indifference" has been around forever.  The truth still holds, but I really get tired of hearing it presented as if it is some new revelation.

How about this one: The opposite of worry is       .

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

The opposite of worry is "sanity".

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

I thought the opposite of worry was indifference.

'the opposite of worry is sanity'
How then, do you accomodate 'what, me worry?' which is the result of much in-depth pondering by Mad (synonym of insane) ?

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

I consider the opposite of worry to be serenity or calm.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

What's the opposite of insanity then?

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

Sanity.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

If you read the book"The monk who sold his Ferrari" by Robin Sharma, you might concur with me that all negative thoughts cause you worry and this drives you towards insanity.

Also an interesting observation made in the book. "It is said about 60000 thoughts run through the mind every day and nearly 95% of it repeats everyday. Mind management is essential to life management"

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

I'm not so sure that sanity is the opposite of insanity, in fact I'm not so sure that's it's easy to quantify. A sane action for you may not be sane to me.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

The opposite of worry is confidence, or certainty.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

The opposite of "worries" is "no worries".

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the movie
"What the bleep do we know"
Semi-documentary with some comedy and deep philosphical thought provoking material.

Timing has an awful lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

Interesting movie - it's all in your head ;)

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

Apathy being the opposit of love is pretty old, but still a great philosophical point. The problem with the english term love is it has such a broad definition.

This becomes glarinly apparent if/when you read the Bible, because the love in there is not the standard english definition.

I think a movie that should be manditory viewing is "Grave of Fireflies" when talking about love. Its the only movie that has moved me to tears.

RE: "Hate" - not the opposite of "Love"

When the son says to his mother “I hate you” he is just being spontaneous for being contradict, it is just a reacting and very short filling.

I suppose the opposite of love is ignorance, hypocrisy and
also indifference
