Connecting to a Versa View CE 1000H

Connecting to a Versa View CE 1000H

(OP)
Hello:

I've been having problems connecting my laptop to a Versa View 1000H. I'm trying to connect via a DF1 cable, however when I try and set up the driver I'm getting a Driver failed to AutoConfig COM1 and therefore will not start. One of my questions is, I'm I supposed to keep RS Linx open for this situation or really it doesn't matter. Another one is do I use a Null Modem cable or a straight up DF1 (RS-232) cable. I'll appreciatte your help in this matter.
Thanks in advance

RE: Connecting to a Versa View CE 1000H

First, the physical connection.  PanelView Plus and VersaViewCE terminals have "DCE" type serial ports, so you connect them to the "DTE" type serial port on a computer with a straight-through RS232 cable.   Don't use the same programming cable you use with a SLC or ControlLogix.

Second, the DF1 driver on your PC.  VersaView CE's use the RSLinx Enterprise DF1 driver, which is configured from within RSView Studio.   Don't run a serial driver in RSLinx Classic or it will conflict with RSLinx Enterprise for control of the serial port.

Third, the DF1 driver on the VersaView CE.  By default it's installed and enabled, but sometimes users load RSLinx configurations that omit that driver or set up other services on the terminal that use the serial port.

Just a thought:

Are A-B still replacing the OEM serial driver with their own for RS Linx Enterprise as they did for the earlier RS Linx? I've had a few problems in the past with driver conflicts between the OEM serial driver and / or mouse driver and the RS Linx drivers (specifically the one for the accursed 1747-PIC DH-485 converter). Easy enough to fix in 'Devices' once you figure out what is wrong with it. The system event log can be helpful in identifying driver conflicts.

The RSLinx Classic 1747-PIC/AIC+ driver in Windows 2000/XP does require that special Rockwell serial VXD driver file.  It just can't run with the standard Microsoft one.    I don't mess with it at all anymore since I got a 1747-UIC USB interface to DH485.   It runs flawlessly.

I don't even know if RSLinx Enterprise has a serial-port DH485  driver;  I always use the 2711P-RN6 onboard the terminal, and load the runtime files via CompactFlash card.

The original poster was just trying to use DF1 full duplex.  It works, but not if you make one of the cardinal mistakes of deleting the on-terminal driver or using the incorrect cable.

Amen to that! I just got my new USB toy, and it works straight out of the box. A-B even managed to write a halfway useful manual to go with it.

Eddie:
I've tried what you suggested but I'm still not getting any results. This seems strange to me since I've downloaded a couple applications to the same terminal in the past. I just want to make sure I'm not leaving out any configuration essentials. Any pointers on this matter, any particular thing I must do? Please help me out on this one since I'm having a really tough time with this one.

Guys thanks for everything, I bought a brand new RS 232 cable and it worked fine. Now I'm really looking into buying that  1747-UIC USB interface to DH485.  Again Thanks
