dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

(OP)
hi...
i'm more of a stylist right now so i was wondering if sw can handle this. so, is it possible to have whatever feature/feature tree update dynamicaly while editing sketches (without having to exit the sketch module so that whatever changes are taken into account)?
it's a bit of a chore to have to do this just to be able to judge the model aesthetically..
thank you

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

If your sketch is dimensioned you could exit the sketch, double click the sketch in the feature manager (the sketch dimensions will pop up), double click the dimension you want to change and use the small rebuild button in the dimension box.

I think that is the closest SW can get to live rebuilds.

:( ... that's a bit sad...
well, i'm glad at least we can be happy with this faint pseudo live rebuilds :)

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

Why do you think that is sad? Are there any other CAD packages that actually do that?

But besides if it doesn't do it, request it (ER).

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

i haven't tried every single one out there but i bet some of them, which are more surface oriented as opossed to solids can do it - working in studiotools i know at least that it should be possible if such a crippled old code as former's alias studiotools can handle 'some' dynamic updates...
so then? no workaround for this... thanks

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

I seriously doubt that any CAD package _should_ be able to do live updates from the sketch while it is being changed. With parametric design and interrelationships, any action in a sketch would propagate throughout the part or assembly. Maybe with massive parallel processing you could do this kind of thing, but you would have to move to Los Alamos.

Right click a toolbar and select customize. Go to the toolbar tab, select "features" and look for a button called "Move/size features" Drag that to one of your toolbars.

When that option is toggled on, changes to the sketch update the I believe. I forget exactly how it works though....but I recall it giving some kind of dynamic update.

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

I believe using surfaces, rather than solids, gives you more dynamic feedback when modifying sketches.

Most of the ID guys here use surfaces because they are more "flexible" and better suited for "swoopy" stuff.

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

I tried the "Move/Size Features" and it does show a projected result, just as when going the long way round and editing a feature. It may be useful. Here's your star . . .

RE: dinamic update of feature while editing sketch

If you are a stylist then you are likely using a lot of lofts in your parts.  If your lofts are created from a single 3D sketch you can drag points within the sketch using "Drag Sketch" and see the loft preview update in real time without exiting the sketch.

qbipq ... SW2007 may be the cheese you are looking for to go with your 'whine'. lol
Finally for surfacing, and saving the best till last, is the Freeform Surface tool. This allows you to dynamically edit a surface using a push and pull, highly dynamic modelling workflow, and create highly complex forms that would typically be a nightmare to create in any modelling system, SolidWorks or otherwise.[/
I've been waiting for some of this stuff for a long time myself.  Very nice.
