File Icons unrecognizeable

File Icons unrecognizeable

Just set up my new XP Pro machine xeon 3.8 2gbram Nvidia 3450/4000 with the latest SW drivers running 1600 x 1200 32bit color. I have a problem with my file icons, they are barely recognizable look like very low resolution with a grey background and no little if color. Is there a setting that may fix this?

RE: File Icons unrecognizeable

DO you have the video card set to SolidWorks?

Have you tried different (lower) screen resolutions?

cheers

Yes its set for SolidWorks. I would rather not set a lower resolution. This is a higher end video than my old system running the same resolution and the icons looked fine. But I will test a lower res to see if that fixes it.

Is this a new monitor also?
Does it have its own set of drivers?
Do you need to update your new BIOS for that monitor?

cheers

These are the same dell monitors as I was using with my old system. However, they report in device manager as plug and play so I need to update their drivers. I will try this and see what happens.

Test your system for graphics memory stability, I have seen corrupt icons on a system with a videocard with broken video ram (windows stores the icons in your video ram, along with the background & some other gui stuff). Also try a different video driver. Are you using a DVI connector? If not, try the other monitor connector on your quadro.

I am using 2 DVI connectors 1 for each monitor. This new system is giving me mre headaches. I just got booted out and it shut down unexpectedly. I rebooted and the bios is telling me that there was a previous thermal fault. The system is overheating, maybe its related to the graphics card

RE: File Icons unrecognizeable

Is this an "off the shelf" or "built yourself" system?
Is the CPU fan working?
Has heatsink thermal grease been applied properly ... or at all?
Has the system been overclocked?
Has this system been fitted with copper heatsink shims? Some of them don't fit properly & actually cause overheating.

cheers

RE: File Icons unrecognizeable

Is this a problem with files you have opened and saved in this new system, or just files that have not yet been modified and saved anew?

RE: File Icons unrecognizeable

You mention that latest, but are they the drivers SW has approved, and not just the latest ones from the Nvidia site... Also I have seen many people Downloading and installing the 64-bit drivers when they should be DLing the 32-bit drivers. List the driver verison and make sure its the 32-bit ones.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I've been out of the office. It seems that my overheating problem was due to lack of good circulation around the PC. I moved the system out from under my desk to an open area and it hasn't shut down since.

As far as the corrupted file Icons go, they are still a problem. My video board is Nvidia Quadra FX 3450/4000 SDI  The video drivers I downloaded from SolidWorks approved driver list. I chose the Quadro FX 3450/4500 6.14.10.7756 10/17/2005. I ran the system and video diagnostics tests built into the Dell F12 boot interupt.

Just to reiterate, my file Icons in windows explorer are barely recognizeable, lack of detail and color regardless of the resolution I set my video at. The SolidWorks History tree looks OK, but icons in file dialog boxes look like the screen shot below.

The 1st screen shot shows my bad icons from my new system. the 2nd screen shot shows the same icons from my old system.
