CH4 destruction

CH4 destruction

CH4 destruction

(OP)
Any ideas on CH4 destruction, other than flaring.  I have heard that UV light is a possibility.

Situation:

We have a gas vapour extraction and treatment system at our lanfill.  We have it set up to remove H2S.  But our H2S concentrations are decreasing and the CH4 is increasing.  We are still below the LEL but I'm trying to come up with a solution to get rid of the CH4 without flaring.  Flaring is an undesirable solution from an approvals prespective (government).

Any ideas?
We are currently using a limestone wet scrubber is series with 3 KOH impregnated carbon  absorptive cansiters.

RE: CH4 destruction

Ivanrave,

UV photolysis is not suitable for methane destruction.  Methane is a great greenhouse gas.  It absorbs IR like a sponge.

However, if you desire to NOT FLARE because of permitting and emissions, then you are left with only a few options options:

(1) cleanup the methane to pipeline quality, compress it and put it in a pipeline, or
(2) Crack the methane to carbon and hydrogen.
(3) Reform the methane to syngas
(4) Use the methane as a plasma gas in the PlasmaWhirl system to treat leachate. see www.plasmawhirl.com

RE: CH4 destruction

Ivanrave,

You can also generate electricity or steam by using the methane as fuel for the generator or boiler.
