SURGE ARRESTER APPLICATION TO VSD SYSTEM

SURGE ARRESTER APPLICATION TO VSD SYSTEM

(OP)
Good day. I would like to inquire whether surge arresters are required to motors or switchgears used for variable speed drive systems. If surge arresters are applied, where should these be located? If not, what are the disadvantages? The system referred is a 2800kW 6kV induction motor connected to a VSD system with a converter transformer rated for 8000kVA, 11/690V. I don't have sufficient exposure to these type of drive system and I highly appreciate to any information shared.
