linking design table to more than 1 sketch

linking design table to more than 1 sketch

(OP)
How can I link a design table to a copy of a sketch which is outside of the part where the original sketch and design table are located?

I've got a design table which is linked to a sketch, and I've got a copy of that sketch in another part that is being used as a profile. I want the copy of the sketch to update when the original sketch is modified.

I tried using Power Copy but could not get the Power Copy to update with the original. Is this a job for Power Copy or some other way?

thanks

pedro

Pedro - Copy - Paste Special - As result with link.

Thanks.

It works fine but I get a message/dialog box when I update the copy which says "replace viewer" and "replace ToolForSYnchronize\Copy.1 with PartBody\Sketch.1" and something about  "1 pointing element"--the only option is to close the dialog box and the product updates correctly.

What does this mean?

One last question--is there a way to automatically update the sketch copy?

thanks again.

Use publications, this will promote stability in your assembly.   Did you use an edge in your sketch to project into something else?  You replace viewer should not pop up on a regular update.  In Tools --> options Part Infrastructure - Update automatic and in Assembly Design -- General?

I didn't use an edge to project into something else (as far as I know) but I have created a pad from the sketch using the Type-dimension, specifying a length and selecting the sketch as my Profile.  For the copy in the new component/part (Copy - Paste Special) I only copied the sketch, not the pad--I created a separate pad (thick) for the sketch copy in the new component/part.

Basically I'm using one sketch as the slab profile for a pad in one component/part and the same sketch as the profile for the skin profile for a pad/thick in a separate component/part.  Make sense?

I'm still getting the "replace viewer" message.  I used publications for the sketch and it now shows up in the spec tree.

Is there a way to check for projections??

Thanks for the help.

RE: linking design table to more than 1 sketch

What is it asking you to replace in the view window?
Expand the tree on the original sketch, if you see a tab called Use-edges, you have projections into the sketch.  It still should not matter for the replace.
When you created your pad in the second part - did you create a profile in a more complicated sketch?

Derek

RE: linking design table to more than 1 sketch

Is it possible that a constraint was created in the sketch to a feature outside of the sketch or maybe in a different part? This may create a projection that would not show in the Use-edges tab.

I didn't find any projections in the sketch when a I checked the tree.

I'm still hacking away.  I redid the entire product but still get the same message.

In the replace window it is asking me to replace the "ToolForSynchronize\Copy.1" with "PartBody\Sketch.1" and in the replace viewer window it shows to two views of my sketch--
one view shows the sketch in its current configuration with a red arrow, the other view shows the configuration which I am changing to, with a green arrow.  The red and green arrows are pointing in different directions.

I realize there is a problem with the pad I've created using the original sketch, but I'm not sure how to fix it.  If I delete the pad the design table works fine and both parts update smoothly with no "replace viewer" messages.

Is it possible to create a copy using "paste specail as result with link" of just the sketch and not the associated pad of the sketch?

Very frustrating.  I know this must be something very simple and obvious but i can't see it.

thanks all.

I take that back--even without the pad the design tables still don't update correctly.

Must be a problem with my constraints but I don't know which or why.
