4" 150# lug BFV

4" 150# lug BFV

I have a 4" 150# Lug BFV on a chilled water return line that is leaking past the seat. I asked the owner and only the CHW with a rust inhibitor and am anti-bacterial agent are present. The original valve leaked and started to blow open even though the handle was locked in place. We put two other valves (1 brand spankin' new) on and both leaked past the seat, and by leak I mean about 1 gal/min.

The owner swears that the pressure in the main that it ties in to is only 70 psi, but this makes me think it is a lot higher than they think. But there are no pressure taps on the line.

Has anyone ever seen this?

RE: 4" 150# lug BFV

Is this a conventional butterfly valve or a more complex such as double/triple offset style, soft seated valve?  Is it automated (perhaps needs more actuator) or manual?

Its a conventional manually actuated BFV

RE: 4" 150# lug BFV

They leak.

Without a pressure relief or measuring device, I wouldn't jump on the valve manufacturer until actual pressure is verified.

See the problem is that this is on the return line, so the line should be under negative pressure, so the valve should stay closed and I would think that leaking would not be a huge issue. It makes me think they have larger problems than a leaky valve.

RE: 4" 150# lug BFV

I'm not sure I agree with your assertion that the return line in running in a negative. If this is a chilled water return line it will be at a lower pressure that the supply side but most likely only by what ever the pressure drop of the chilled water system is. I don't think I've ever seen a system that ran in a true vacuum on the return side unless there was a problem at the strainer or that nature.
I would try to get an idea of the true system pressure and if that appears normal, get the valve manufacture involved they may have some valuable imput.

I'm not a real engineer, but I play one on T.V.

yeah, I'd like to get an accurate pressure reading, but there are no ports on the main itself, just on branches. We also used 3 different valves, I think one was a Nibco and the other two were brands I didn't recognize. This is also a closed loop system, it is pumped, but we are fairly far away from the pumps.
