Fuel Oil No. 2 Storage Tank

(OP)
I need to install two AST (aboveground storage tank), i will use Simplex fuel oil pump inside the dike to supply fuel to the generators and the boilers.  We are using solenoid valve and level gauge and leak probe.  My Question is?? We can supply electrically the solenoid valve from the control panel on top of the fuel oil pump.  Is it necesarry to use any type of explosion proof fittings.  Also we need to connect the level and leak probe.  Do need these probes any seal or explosion proof fitting.  We are planning to use rigid conduit with short elbow and waterproof box to do the pipe rough.

Could anybody teach the correct installation of the sensor and solenoid valve on top ot the AST.

RE: Fuel Oil No. 2 Storage Tank

Hire an electrical consultant.

Otherwise this is covered in some parts of NFPA, NEC, and API.  You need to determine the area classification.  API RP 500 would be a good place to start.

RE: Fuel Oil No. 2 Storage Tank

Refer to NFPA 30 - Flammable and Combustion Liquid Code and
NFPA 30A - Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and Repair Garages.

If the AST will be installed outside, I recommend using a vaulted double-wall AST with a good quality weatherproof exterior finish in lieu of a diked tank.  Diked tanks tend to collect debris and become maintenance issues.

The web sites for 2 AST manufacturers are www.highlandtank.com and www.containmentsolutions.com (formerly Hoover Containment Systems).

Also, if the piping will be installed underground, I recommend installing a double-wall flexible piping system instead of a metal or rigid fiberglass piping system.  Total Containment Systems, Inc. at www.totalcontainment.com makes an excellent double-wall flexible piping system.

Try this site:

If they can stuff a catadyn heater inside their vault, a solenoid should be easy.
