internal combustion engine manufacturer

(OP)
Hi everyone
Does any one can refer me to an E-mail address of a person (or a department) in any motor or internal combustion engine manufacturer who may be interested in an idea, which can take the OTTO cycle concept one step further (a personal E-mail would be preferred)?

I am a mechanical engineer with 25 years of experience in combustion related subjects and the idea that I am referring to has been briefly examined and approved by several professional experts in Israel (not manufactures).

Thanks
Dan Nahoom
P. S. I tried the known automotive and/or engine manufacturers sites with no response at all.

RE: internal combustion engine manufacturer

Dear Dan Nahoom = Good Luck! If you find anyone behind the Curtain let me know too! You will find that there are layers of gate-keepers starting at the Intellectual Property Dept. Lawyers that make you sign submission forms that are basically non-non-disclosure saying they will steal-it unless they are feeling generous, and then they never write back with a + or -  or return your mailings back to you.

RE: internal combustion engine manufacturer

I work at a consulting firm that does a considerable amount of engine design and analysis, with clients who make engines of all sizes for just about any application you can think of.  Many "fundamental" engine improvements have originated at our company over the years.  Recently, we've even done "alternative" engine design work (Stirling, etc) for clients.

It is my understanding that we are often approached by "snake-oil" salesmen seeking validation of an impractical (and sometimes impossible) idea, and in some cases we'd be happy to analyze/develop such concepts for an appropriate price.  I've not had to work on any of those personally (I think the price stops most such ideas at the door).

It's not uncommon for us to arrange cooperative work between the ourselves, the US govt. and engine manufacturers (cost sharing, etc), when new or pie-in-the-sky concepts come along.  If you want me to see if I can get some free advice for you, I could probably catch my boss after hours and have him take a look at your design.  Can't promise that he'll say anything you're interested in hearing, but I can promise to let you know what he says.  If he likes it, he may know some key phone numbers. email me at ivymike1031@yahoo.com if this sounds the slightest bit appealing.

FYI everyone, this offer doesn't extend to the rest of the world. I'm just going to try this out once, if daniv is interested, and see what comes of it (so don't start filling my account with all sorts of requests).

Hi “IVYMILKE”
Yes I will appreciate if you will talk to your boss.
Enclosed is an introduction doc’ that I have prepared in past.
I also have two recommendation letters for my idea which were given by professors in mechanical engineering but I could not attached them since it is in picture format and the sys’ does not excepts this kind of format. If you will contact me via my direct address (which is on the attached doc) I’ll be happy to sand it to you (and your boss if he will be interested in the idea).
Thanks

Performance improvement of internal combustion engine

This is an abstract of an idea for performance improvement of internal combustion engines by modifying the OTTO Cycle, which is the most common cycle in spark ignition engines, to an ATKINSON Cycle exhibiting a higher thermodynamic efficiency.  Although the ATKINSON Cycle was invented more than a century ago, so far it has not been implemented due to the complicity of the mechanical arrangement that was suggested at the time.

In the ATKINSON Cycle the piston performs different strokes in order to satisfy the various thermodynamic needs of each working stroke, mainly the expansion stroke and the compression stroke, contrary to the OTTO Cycle where identical strokes are used.  The length of the compression stroke is determined primarily by the fuel characteristics allowing the highest pressure and temperature at the end of this stroke, without exceeding the detonation conditions.  On the other hand, the expansion stroke must be longer than the compression stroke in order to ensure a complete expansion of the combustion products.  Therefore, in the OTTO Cycle, at the end of the expansion stroke, the combustion products are expelled to the atmosphere while still possessing high temperature and pressure, which means energy losses and low efficiency.
A comparison between the OTTO Air Cycle and the ATKINSON Air Cycle shows an advantage in efficiency by 12.7% of the ATKINSON Cycle, with a gas constant value of 1.3 and compression and expansion ratios of 8.3 and 17, respectively.  More detailed calculations and simulations, which take into account the combustion process, pumping losses and various working loads show the following results:

OTTO Cycle efficiency    ATKINSON Cycle efficiency    Improvement              %
Low working load    0.359    0.478    33
Medium working load    0.372    0.479    28
Full working load    0.384    0.479    24.7

The present results reflect the development of a mechanical arrangement concept that offers a workable solution for applying the ATKINSON Cycle to internal combustion engines.
The inventor and his idea are available for detailed information on this matter and for creation of the necessary framework to promote and explore the possibilities of the invention for the benefit of all sides involved.

Sincerely Yours

D. Nahoom

RE: internal combustion engine manufacturer

Dan,

I got your email (and replied), but unfortunately the attachments were not there.

I think that if you had a reliable design that could be manufactured inexpensively in large volumes, you'd probably have an easy time licensing it to an OEM. You'd have to patent it first, which I hope you've done.  If you have a patent application # or patent number, I can pull it up and look at it at uspto.gov.

Again, the idea is appealing, but the problems are always in the details.  Get me a sketch to peek at, and I'll be happy to present it to some very experienced engine designers for you, and let you know what they have to say.

Thanks,
Isaac

RE: internal combustion engine manufacturer

oh yeah, I should have mentioned this previously - if you haven't looked for similar patents yet, I'd suggest that you do it.  http://www.uspto.gov ; is a good place to start.  Go to the patent search and look for variable compression ratio engines.
