adhesive bonding on Zerodur aluminium and titanium

adhesive bonding on Zerodur aluminium and titanium

(OP)
Hi everybody,
We are making assembly of 3 parts: one is aluminium, second is titanium and third is aluminium.
This assembly is for space application.
We have used 3M 2216 with preparation of surface as described in other threads for aluminium. The result was not good at all (peeling on aluminium)after moisture and temperature tests, and before vibration tests .
What do you think about this glue (2216) Do you have any experience with another glue qualified for space application.
Other thing: we cannot have a too large 45° joint.
The parts are cylindres with diameter between  15mm and 30mm.
The thickness of glue was 100 micrometers.
Thanks for your reply.
Best regards
Abdel MAHI

3M Scotch-Weld 2216 is a flexible adhesive used to join metals to rubber and foams.  You should try metal-to-metal adhesives, like Scotch-Weld 420 or 460.  Make sure you review the information at the 3M Internet site:

RE: adhesive bonding on Zerodur aluminium and titanium

I have had good luck with EC2216B/A in bonding aluminum to aluminum and aluminum to fiberglass in aircraft secondary structures.  For primary structures we usually use a film adhesive.  I have no experience with aluminum to titanium.  The key with aluminum to aluminum is surface prep and the use of a good bonding primer, EC 3960 or equiv.  In the past we used to use a HF etch or a PAA for surface prep, but recently we have had good results with a product called AC 130.  AC 130 is environmentally friendly and does need the tank and the exhaust hood, etc....  We have also had good luck with the scotchweld and Hysol 9304 products.
