Can Solidworks do this?

Can Solidworks do this?

Can Solidworks do this?

(OP)
I've got access to Solidworks but before I invest the time I have a question I have not yet found an answer for.

If I have 2D isometric CAD files, can I import these into SW and then have SW generate any sort of 3D model from them?

RE: Can Solidworks do this?

there is a 2D to 3D, but you will need more then just an ISO view. You will need a 3 view drawing to really make use of the 2D to 3D conversation too. Plus it's not hard to use, after you understand how to use it.

See help on this.

RE: Can Solidworks do this?

Not from a 2d isometric.

Now if you had good 1:1 scale ortho views of the part....you could bring that in and use it to help construct the model. Still some work there to be done...nothing quick and easy. No 3d program offers that.

RE: Can Solidworks do this?

Do you have plan views?  Or just Isometrics?  The short answer, I'm pretty sure, is that you're looking at the wrong type of software for what it seems you are trying to do, but it is fairly easy to create 3-D models, particularly if you have the standard views.

RE: Can Solidworks do this?

Well, yes, sort of. You can convert a drawing to a part, but it is hardly an automatic thing. See the FAQ
http://www.eng-tips.com/faqs.cfm?fid=838 which may help.
Generally my experience has been that is is much less frustrating and productive to learn SW while using it to do new parts. Working through the tutorial is a good way. Finding a mentor would be very good. There should be a users group near Pittsburgh which could be very helpful.
Several major race teams use SW, you just have to bear with the transition.

I have plan views as well.

Thanks guys, all I needed was the "it's possible". I'm now digging through the online help and have found the 2D to 3D tool bar section.  read read read...
