Hello everybody:

For Diesel engines, burning Bunker C (fuel oil Nº6) and operating in a humid ambient, how does the high humidity level in the intake air affect the performance of the combustion?

The air is supplied by turbochargers and, before entering the manifolds, it passes through the intercoolers, where a condensate retainer screen collects this water and send it down to the drainage.

Even when we see this water flowing out of the drainage traps, we suspect that some water goes to the combustion chambers, and it can induce some kind of corrosion on the cylinder liners (liquid water combined with sulphur of the combustion gases results in sulphuric acid).

The reaction of burning hydrocarbons in air is carbon dioxide and water, so your engine will have a substantial amount of water in the cylinders even if pure dry air is ingested initially.

Therefor the change in the risk of corrosion will be negligible.
