Code classification of a lab with natural gas and acetylene

Code classification of a lab with natural gas and acetylene

Code classification of a lab with natural gas and acetylene

(OP)
Okay .... so there is an existing laboratory with natural gas for lab experiment type purposes and they are adding acetylene in containers to serve some lab type equipment.  Oh and the acetylene is run to the equipment vis piping.  And there is an electrical panel in the room. Oh yes, the lab is also air conditioned and there are exhaust fans, or fume hoods for the specialized equipment.

So I am looking at the Canadian Electrical Code and have the feeling that the room should be now classed Class 1 Zone 2 (i) and/or (ii) with group II C (Group A) and Group II A (Group D) whatevers for the light switches and manual starters.... also that the electrical panel should be enclosed.

Just wondering if my impression is correct.... or is this one of those up to the local inspector whatevers.... note I am trying to get ahold of an inspector.  :D

Oh yes class 1 zone 2 is for areas which "Explosive gas atmospheres are not likely to occur in normal operation and, if they do occur, they will exist for a short time only" or they will only be present as a result of an accidental rupture, etc., etc., etc.

Thanks
