How to do a 3 dimensional swept protrusion

I have been working off and on with SE for a month trying to get it to do a 3D Swept protusion. All I want is to draw a line, then go perpendicular to that(any direction) then go into "z space" with another perpendicular line and then finish the sweep. I havent been able to do it. What am I doing wrong?

draw the profile for the cross section in a sketch, then draw the path in XY (one sketch) and then in Z (another sketch). Combine the paths into one entity with the derived curve command (surfacing toolbar). Hide the initial path sketchs. Then do the swept command.

Just one extension to the question:
I made the derived curve but the only thing is that
the point at which the two curves connect is a 90 degree
angle. The fillet command doesnt work because the sketches
were not done in the same plane. Is the ONLY way to create a curve between them and then move the end points and then re sweep? That seems like an awful lot of trouble. for a simple task like this.

Try leaving the space for the fillet in your sketches (don't connect the paths). then create a keypoint curve (select the point and the line) and adjust the tangency (on the screen or in the var table).
Then create the derived curve followed by the swept feature.
