We are in the process of establishing a distribution center for our Sewer and Drain Cleaning equipment in Japan and would like to know if we should create a specific motor for their application or use some type of Voltage Converter.

The stated voltage throughout Japan is 100V and the frequency is 50 Hz in Eastern Japan and 60 Hz in Western Japan.   Has anyone had any success using a standard “off-the-shelf” U.S. 110V 50 Hz or 115V 60 Hz single phase induction motor for an application in Japan?

Also, has anyone experienced any problems with JPSSI or RoHS??

Any input would be greatly appreciated… Thank you.

If I remember correctly, the 100V is optimistic, especially in rural areas.  Standard US stuff will by unhappy.

We ran into problems with JPSSI, and this is definately not RoHS. For us best solution is to make special stainless-steel-only assemblies for Japan as platings, painting, coatings, etc. are pretty much all banned there.

120V/60HZ = 2
100V/50HZ = 2

The 60 HZ/ 120 V motor will work, but the power will be reduced to 83.3% due to the speed reduction ( constant torque motor range). However most of the loads will require less power when speed drops, to the cubic power of the speed reduction for pumps and fans, but expect less flow and pressure.

Further to aolalde's post, I t may be problematic to use one motor  interchangably if a pump is involved.
If you size your motor for 100V 50Hz. it will be over loading and over pumping at 60Hz..
If you size for 60Hz. your flow will be inadequate at 50Hz.
You can select the motor based on 50Hz operation and then increase the size based on 60Hz. operation.
