Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

(OP)
Everytime I try to open a file in AutoCad 2006 format, I get a message that says the file is invalid, or an unsupported version.

WTH?  AutoCad is at version 2007, and we don't have translation capability for 2006?

RE: Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

if it's a couple of files, I will do it for you. However, you should look into getting Acad Lite to step it back to an older version.

Or if you have a Solidworks license, it comes with DWG Editor, that can open, save as any version.

can you get the dxf files from your provider? you might have better results since dxf is not really version specific.

you should look into this plugin, it's free if you have Acad.

It's not that I can't do them - I'm in the translation business, afterall.  My problem is that I want to WORK with the files.  I don't want to HAVE TO translate them through any other program.  That's why Catia has a built in AutoCad translator.

At the time of posting, I had already converted them down to AutoCad 2000, (in another CAD system) and re-imported them.  But it should not be so...

I have scoured the documentation seeking the supported AutoCad versions, but cannot find it.  If anyone else can open the later versions of AutoCad, (i.e. - 2006, 2007) please let me know, as this would indicate some sort of an installation problem (or something) on my part.  I cannot open ANY AutoCad 2006 files. (so of course, I can't open 2007, either, obviously)

Thank you.

RE: Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

It is written in V5R16 documentation
"Version 5 supports DXF/DWG formats version 12,13, 14 and AUTOCAD2000, AUTOCAD2000i and AUTOCAD2002."

AutoCAD expert in our company says that AUTOCAD2002 format is equal up to AUTOCAD2005. AutoCAD2006 is a new format at AUTOCAD. That's why Catia can't read it. Sorry.

Thanks for the info.

Every other CAD platform on the market can read it.  Why are we getting short-changed on this one?

RE: Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

Some answers:
DS Development Cycle is 24 months
DS is only releasing one release a year
DS won't add functionality in a Service Pack (this is a good thing!)

RE: Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

To piggyback this thread,
I can't seem to open .dxf and .dwg 3D files in Catia. They get "flattened" and opened in Drafting module. Is there a way around this (other than exporting it all to IGES and getting an enormous file in the end)...?

RE: Catia V5R16 cannot read AutoCad 2006?!?!?

Catia recognizes dxf and dwg as 2d files.  Unlike the .igs extention (3d file) - changing it to .ig2 loads that same file into drafting (2d file).

Derek
