Several Drafting Questions

Several Drafting Questions

Several Drafting Questions

(OP)
Hi All,

I have a couple of drafting questions that I hope to research and answer on my own through the catia documents but I thought i might throw them out there anyways.

1. Is there a way to create dimensions with "doglegs" so as to prevent overcrowding of dimensions when the features you are dimensioning are close together?

2. In UG drafting you can dimension features using "feature parameter" options which allows you to dimension, foe example, a counterbored hole in essentially a couple of picks. It gives hole diameter, c/bore dia and depth in one concise piece of text thus reducing the number of cross sections you need to create. Does anything similar exist in catia?

3. Can you create ordinate dimensions similar to the type you can create in UG with a common zero and each point having its own dimension? Catia has coordinate dimensions but they seeem to clutter up my drawings to much(they appear to be text with a leader). Also the coordinates are all based from the absolute zero( I assume) and sometimes you want them based from another point. Stacked dimensions are a close work around but they tend to clutter up as well and the fact I can't create "doglegs" (see #1) only makes the problem worse. Does any one have any tips?

4. How (or where) do you set defaults for dimension orientation ie, vertical/horizontal? I find that I have to change the properties for each individual dimension to achieve this so there must be a way to modify.

A big thanks in advance to all who respond.

p.s. I hope ,as I gain more catia experience, I can eventually make some contributions in the form of help as  so many of you have made to me and others.

ooops ... forgot one.

5. How do you re-associate a dimension to a different point? Say I dimension to a hole and now I want to use the same dimension but pick a different hole without creating a new dimension?

Thanks, thixoguy

Found #5, use  "re-route dimension". 4 more to go!

RE: Several Drafting Questions

1. Create a "funnel".  Right click -> Properties -> Extension Line -> (click the box called "Funnel" and modify to suit)

2. I don't think it exists, but will leave it to someone else to answer.  As it is, I use a diameter on the thru-hole, and add the C'bore as text.

3. First off, always read your prompts.  You are always asked to select a starting point for your dimensions. (axis reference)  Secondly, if you're unhappy with the coordinate or table method, use "cumulated dimensions".  This is the third option from the left in the pull-down from the dimension icon.  It looks like standard N/C dimensioning - except it has a single arrow on the dimension line coming from the origin.

4. That goes back to the standard you select to use.  Don't know what you are using, but you can switch the standard by going to File -> Page Setup, and selecting a new one from the pulldown box.  (dimension
