section view not displaying correctly

section view not displaying correctly

section view not displaying correctly

(OP)
I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem I'm having with a section view not displaying correctly on a drawing.  If I show the section as shaded with edges and toggle on the box for "Display Only Surface" I get the geometry behind the section plane as well.  The view displays correctly if the display style is set to Hidden Lines Removed.

The bigger underlying issue is the fact that my workstation has a video card that is not blessed by Solidworks, a Quadro NVS285.  No questions about card and drivers, please!!!  I've had various display issues which I suspect are a function of this card, but nothing that has been a show stopper.  I've been informed that if a new card is needed (I'm strongly leaning that way, and have been for a while) I can get one ordered.  I'd just like to confirm that some of you who have certified video cards can correctly display a section view using the combination of shaded with edges and "Display Only Surface".  I'm just trying to verify that the issue is with my video card and not with SWX.  SWX 2006, SP4.0, by the way.

Assuming that a new video card is needed (not a big stretch, I know), what are peoples' opinions of the Quadro FX1400?  I'm looking at this one because it's a mid-range card with multiple monitor support and I've had excellent luck with Quadro cards in the past, current situation excepted, of course!

Thanks in advance for any input,
Dave Gowans

RE: section view not displaying correctly

Having the wrong v-card can cause a lot of display problems, including the one you mentioned. I have no experience using the Quadro FX1400.
I suggest purchasing a good card per SW.

I know the wrong card can cause lots of problems.  What I'm trying to determine here is if the cause actually lies with the video card or with SWX.  I suspect the card is the problem, but need to justify the cost of a new card by showing examples of why a new card is needed.  Can you confirm this isn't a SWX problem?

Thanks,
Dave

RE: section view not displaying correctly

I just tried, I do not see the problem here.

Thanks,

That's what I suspected.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

Turn on the "Software OpenGL", if the problem goes away then it's a v-card issue. See FAQ for details on how to turn on Software OpenGL.

OK, I turned on Software OpenGL and the section view still displays incorrectly.  Now what?  I'm still of the opinion that I need a new video card, but this seems to indicate a different problem.

Any ideas as to what this issue could be?

Thanks,
Dave Gowans

RE: section view not displaying correctly

I would still get a new V-card. But to me that indicates something else is the problem... can you post the files or an image of hte problem?

I can't seem to DL the file... it asks me to upload the file or when I click DL it says there is problem with the page.

Scott,

Thanks for the effort, but I seem to be having the same issues with Mooload that you were.  Could you post it elsewhere?

RE: section view not displaying correctly

Dave,

I am seeing the same problem here, but I'm on a P.O.S.
machine with a crappy video card here at work. SWX-05, WinNT. Not much help as I don't have a good system to compare with.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

Scott,

Thanks, but I can get my drawing to do that.

What I am having trouble with is getting the section to display correctly using the combination of Shaded with Edges and "Display only Surface".  Can you get this to work on your end?

Thanks, I appreciate the time you've spent on this.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

OK now I see what you are after. I get this same result on all my files. Not sure if you were getting something else before, but I believe this is functionality.

Just to clarify, is this what you're seeing?

http://www.savefile.com/files/2083340

And you're saying that this is working as designed?  Huh!  Why do you suppose this is the case?  Seems like "Display only surface" should do just that, no matter what your display style is.

Thanks,
Dave Gowans

another file I used as an example. When in shaded mode it shows the entire model. If you display as surface only you will have to use the HLR. You should consider making an ER for this type of issue.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

I ended up submitting this to our VAR and got the following response:

This issue has previously been submitted to our Development group as SPR 264472 - "'Display only surface' doesn't work for section views that have a shaded display style."

Guess I'm going to have to find another reason to get that new video card........

RE: section view not displaying correctly

(OP)
Another update - should have checked the SPR # on the SWX website before I posted.  I attempted to look up the SPR and got the following:

No record found for SPR 264472.

I'm having our VAR look into this some more and will try to post an update if I find out anything meaningful.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

the reason for getting a new card is obvious... you dont' have a supported card plus it would help with performance of your machine... I know you probably don't believe that but it really can.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

(OP)
Scott,

I don't doubt for a minute that the performance of my machine would improve - I just need to allocate my time to the things I absolutely need  to get done and right now I'm able to do those things with the card I've got.

Granted, I'd be faster with a new card, so it's on my list of things to do when I get a chance.

BTW,  the SPR info is available online if you login to the customer center; I initially looked through the support section of the SWX website.

RE: section view not displaying correctly

yes the support section just list SPR's that have been fixed.
