Duplex ESSO wide plate test

Duplex ESSO wide plate test

Duplex ESSO wide plate test

(OP)
Hello all,

I am looking for information about the Duplex ESSO test.
It is a large scale crack arres test, developed in the 60's, in Japan. It is a brittle crack arrestability test, where the specimen is loaded in tension. The brittle crack is initiated by driving a wedge into a V-shaped slot, which has a fine saw cut in the root.
The Duplex ESSO test is a special case of the ESSO test, since a brittle crack starter ( a pre-cracked piece which leads the crack to the correct location) is attached to the plate.

The problem is that I can't find anywhere specific data about how to execute this test.
If anyone can help, or if somebody know about a good publication about this, this will be most welcome !

Thanks in advance,

Koen

RE: Duplex ESSO wide plate test

Here is access to one paper by Nippon steel using Google that described the plate test piece geometry and results that may help you;

www0.nsc.co.jp/shinnihon_english/ kenkyusho/contenthtml/n90/n9006.pdf

If you have trouble getting to this web site, the title of the paper is “Development of Super-9% Ni Steel Plates with Superior Low-Temperature Toughness for LNG Storage Tanks”

RE: Duplex ESSO wide plate test

Do an open search on Google using  "notched tension test and esso".  Leave off the quotation marks.

Here is one pdf I found (in Norwegian) that had a lot of references that are readable (English) for me.  There appears to be a lot of work by Nyhus who is still at Sintef.  The second URL is their publication department with some contacts.

There are several other hits on this search that maybe of interest.

I am presently fighting Adobe Reader since my latest update and can't open any documents.  Every time I try it locks my keyboard.

You may want to look at the list of Sintef  publications.
