Bridge Crane Loads
Bridge Crane Loads
(OP)
Does anyone have any resource data that could provide me with an approximate design wheel load for:
1. 40 ton bridge crane spanning 100 ft.
2. 20 ton bridge crane spanning 100 ft.
?
1. 40 ton bridge crane spanning 100 ft.
2. 20 ton bridge crane spanning 100 ft.
?

For 40 ton bridge crane, 100 ft span, 2 wheels/endtruck
wheel load 85,200 lb
Crane Weight 145000 lb
trolley weight 31,700 lb
Min Approach distance 4 ft 9 in
For 20 ton bridge crane, 100 ft span 2 wheels/endtruck
wheel load 48,300 lb
Crane Weight 93,400 lb
Trolley Weight 10,600 lb
Min Approach distance 3 ft
If your min approach is different or you want to calculate the wheel loads for reduced crane and trolley weights just divide the crane weight evenly all wheels, put the lifted load and trolley at minimum approach and sum the moments. It is somewhat crude but gets fairly close estimates.

I have a pretty good spread sheet published by the AISC for crane beam desing... I don't have your eMail address at the office, but will send it this evening.

I talked to Whiting a couple of years ago and they said they were reissuing their handbook. But it hasn't happened yet. If you call them they might give you information for a 40T 100 ft. crane, but it's hard to get them interested in smaller ones.
