Wrought Aluminium NE 15 V

Wrought Aluminium NE 15 V

Wrought Aluminium NE 15 V

(OP)
Does anybody recognise this designation of Aluminium?
I believe it was referenced in BS 1476, but this standard is now obsolete and I didn't keep my copy !
The reference I have is on a drawing which is in poor condition and difficult to read, so it could be HE 15 and the suffix could be "W" rather than "V".
If anybody recognises it, could they either let know composition / mech properties, or what the current equivalent would be?

I found a table with composition & properties of Al alloy HE15 in condition W, per B.S. 1476,  in The Surface Treatment and Finishing of Aluminium and Its Alloys, 3rd Edn., p. 757 (1964):

British proprietary names: Alcan GB-26S, AWCO 305, BA 305, Birmetal 478, Duralumin S, Durcilium K, Hiduminium 66, Impalco 660.

Composition (wt%, single values are maxima): 3.8-4.8 Cu, 0.2-0.8 Mg, 0.5-0.90 Si, 0.7 Fe, 0.3-1.2 Mn, 0.2 Ni, 0.2 Zn, 0.3 (Cr+Ti), 0.05 Pb, 0.05 Sb, 0.05 Sn.
The reference below gives the nominal composition as 4.4 Cu, 0.7 Si, 0.6 Mg, 0.6 Mn.

Minimum Mechanical Properties for W condition.
Section Thickness     0.1% YS, tons/in2        TS, tons/in2     Elongation
0-3/8” (0-9.5 mm)        14.0 (22.0 kg/mm2)    24.0 (387.8)      12%
3/8-3” (9.5-76.2 mm)    15.0 (23.6)                 25.0 (39.4)       12%
values for 3-6" sections same as for 3/8-3" except only 10% elongation.
tons seem to be 'long tons' or 'metric tons' (2200 pounds)

More information, such as heat treatments for conditions W (solutionized) & WP (solutionized + precipitation hardened), is given pages 58-62 in Hiduminium technical data, High Duty Alloys, Ltd., Slough, England (1958).

The W condition corresponds roughly to a T4 temper, and WP corresponds to T6 temper. I think the W condition would be used for forming processes, not for end product; check whether WP. W & WP are suffixes to the alloy.

The alloy composition is similar to 2014, 2014A & 2017. Closest match is 2014A (nominal 4.4 Cu, 0.7 Mg, 0.8 Si, 0.75 Mn).

Data comparison for solutionized + artificially age hardened condition WP:  YS & TS of HE15 WP are about 5% lower than for 2014-T6,-T651. HE15 WP elongation is 8%.

A prefix to the alloy designation refers to the product form, B.S. 1470-77:
V = Extruded round tube and hollow sections.

Hope this helps.
