Century Electric Co. Motor Information

Century Electric Co. Motor Information

Century Electric Co. Motor Information

(OP)
Does anyone know where I can find information on an old Century Motor?  In particular I'm trying to find out a proper replacement and need to find out whether its single or double winding.

On the nameplate, there is a line that reads:

3S.2W.VAR.TORQ.

Does this give any insight into what I need.

I appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Brian

RE: Century Electric Co. Motor Information

If it has a nameplate, could you post all the "nameplate data"?. Additional information like the numbert of terminal wires and the tag number on each lead, and the operating speeds will help too.

I don't have information on the leads, but here is the nameplate:

Century
Model:  SCM-254-NA3-101N
H.P.: 3-1.3-.75
Ph: 3
RPM: 1760-1175-875
CY: 60
Volts: 208
AMPS: 8.4-5.1-3.3
Time Rating: Cont. Open
Temp Rise:  40 deg. C
Unnamed item:  3S.2W.Var.Torq
Serial No. 5AS20994

This is a 3 speed motor, as you can tell, but we're replacing with a 2-speed since its difficult to find a 3-speed replacement, and currently they're only controlling it as a 2-speed.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

RE: Century Electric Co. Motor Information

Century was bought by Magentek, who was bought by A.O. Smith. Contact A.O. Smith now, they should be able to help.

RE: Century Electric Co. Motor Information

Hi bpitreau:

Now is more clear. 3S.2W.VAR.TORQ means 3 speeds, 2 windings, Variable Torque.

For two speeds, You could buy a similar motor 3 phase, 60 HZ, 208 Volts  and adapt the shaft and mounting.

for  3HP-1760 rpm and  0.75HP-875 rpm you can get a single winding variable torque motor.

If you need the 1.3HP-1175 rpm and any other of the two remaining, it has to be a two winding motor.

Single winding motors are possible only with  poles ratio  1/2 (2/4, 4/8, 6/12, etc)

Excellent,

That sheds a lot of light on this situation as well 1 vs. 2 winding motors in general.  I appreciate your input on this.

This was the first time I had posted here, and I am very happy with the results.
