Put a Label on a Diameter

Put a Label on a Diameter

Put a Label on a Diameter

(OP)
Good afternoon, I have an assembly and one of the parts has a .875" diameter and I need to put a flat label around that diameter.  I have tried to use bend, but nothing ever happens, because I thought fold and unfold would be perfect here.  I am hoping the I don't have to make a second configuration and re-do all of the text.  The label is .005 thick, if that matters, and I would like to show the label in and exploded view.  Thank you in advance for any assistance and helpful thoughts on the problem.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

Import and image onto a face/surface or if you have photoworks use a decal.

Thank you for the reply, Scott.  Will I be able to pull it off in an Exploded view and number it?  I need it to be in the BOM also.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

no and image is just that and image. It's not seen as a part. If you need it to be in the BOM. You can make a circular Sheet metal part (thin extrusion). Just make a "C" shape, essentially a circle with a gap in it. Then extrude that using Sheet metal (base flange) make it a thin thickness and you can place that over the round part in your assembly. You can attach an image to that SM then if you want something on it.

If you don't understand let me know, but you can find that type of Sheet metal part in the help.

Thank you again for the response, Scott.  That was what I was afraid of, double work.  Thanks again.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

Have you tried the Wrap function to wrap the text around a curved surface?

If you wrap the text around a sheet metal part & use the Scribe option, you will be able to flatten the part but not the text.

If you use the [b]Deboss option, you will be able to flatten the part and text, but you may have to use a "stencil" type font to avoid the voids created by some letters.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

Thank you for that response CorBlimeyLimey.  I did just discover that folding and unfolding of sheet metal.  I tried to put a decal on the surface and when I fold the part the decal lost it and part of the decal disappeared.  I also tried it with text, both embossed and scribed and both did the same thing, part or all of text would disappear when the part folded.  I am now thinking abouthaving a simple label and having a separate file for the C extrution and just assemble the two and see if that works.  Nothing seems to be able to handle the nearly 355 degree fold, that is nearly all text all of the way acrossed the entire label.  Oh well, I will try again on Monday and see if I can get the dang thing to work.  Thanks again, I appreciate teh suggestions.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

quest4k,

A flex feature should produce the bend you want.  It sounds like you've tried this already, but you might want to spend more time trying to make it work.  I've done it with a flat label that had the text created with a .001" high protrusion.

Thank you for the response, -b.  The tried to download flex, but their security does not like my security, so I can not try it and I am not going to play any more games with adobe or sw.  I will just use 2 separate parts and that is that, which was whatI thought it was going to be in the beginning.  Thanks all for the responses.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

(OP)
Thank you Scott, but I could find it and it was not in add-in's and I have the old way almost ready to insert into my subassembly, so no sense waistin any more time on this, I have already wasted two days on this.  Thanks anyway.

RE: Put a Label on a Diameter

It's not an Add-in. It is in the features toolbar. Tools\options\Customize\Command\Catagories\Feature - find flex feature icon.

I realize you've probably moved on to more productive things, but for thos following along, now and in the future:

Flex is a feature available in part mode.  Insert>>Feature>>Flex.  You would need to create two configurations of the part, one in the form that the label was manufactured, and one in the installed state.

Thank you all, for the help and yes, I did accidentally find flex, right above wrap, but it was to late, but I already build a new model and it is almost done and all I have to do is figure out how to get two wrapped embossed letters inside of a wrapped embossed diamond, which is our logog.  thanks again.
