Steel balcony with wood floor truss

Steel balcony with wood floor truss

Steel balcony with wood floor truss

(OP)
My Architect wants to frame condo balconies with steel channels (balcony about 4'x8') The floor is wood truss joists parallel to the balcony cantilever.

Has anyone done this before? Any tips?

The wood truss is most likely 18" deep 2x4, an "I" truss could also be used.

There is no published info available on these joists (locally they are made by a Mitek process and all info is held very closely by the local shop which sells design-build)

RE: Steel balcony with wood floor truss

I have cantilevered LVL's as you describe.  But I am not sure about the steel channels.  We had the LVL's cant out the 4'-0" (they were tied back well within the floor system) and then bucketed floor trusses into the LVLs (perp to the cantilever).  Be sure to watch the "uplift" reactions at the tie point from the baclony live load without live load on the interior in that area.  Also, if the member you are wanting to use is a pre-engineered truss, get with the truss designer and have him run one for you.  Be sure to supply him with the loads!  Good luck.
