noob question

noob question

(OP)
I need to model an acrhway that would be made out of precast concrete. That will look something similar to this http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i240/gscully/archway.jpg My technique was to draw the profile then make a centerline the distance of the arch radius below the profile.  Then I used the swept surface command.  To make the arch, so far so good.  Now I need to make the ends which are parallel to the ground.  I need the profile to match up, what I tried was to make a new plane at the end paste the original profile and extrude it but it doesn't match up well.http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i240/gscully/arch1.jpg  Also I want it so that the width of the archway can be modified later of.

RE: noob question

The way I would do that would be to make the entire thing in a single sweep, using a 3D path.  So the first archway would be on the front plane, and the end bits would be say on the top plane, all in a single 3D sketch or composite curve.  That way it will automatically miter the corners correctly.

RE: noob question

Notice that in the photo the miter of the arch and straight segment does not pass through the centerline of the arch.  Do a layout sketch that shows the elevation of the archway.  In the sketch you can lay out the correct miter angle to trim the arch with.  Then you can use the sketch to drive the later features.

RE: noob question

You could extrude it straight, then use the Bend command.
If you have SW 05 or 06.

RE: noob question

make it a weldment. The cross section of the arch looks constant, so make a sketch of that as your weldment profile then make a sketch or sketches that define the arch itself. The weldment function will allow you to miter all the corners.

thanks for the tips I used the sweep method, I'm using SW 2003 couldn't find the weldment feature, that method seemed like a good way to do it, and yes it is a constant cross section.
