64 bit operating system and 32 bit programs

64 bit operating system and 32 bit programs

64 bit operating system and 32 bit programs

The visual basic 6.0, 32 bit executables sometimes run, some other programs run part way then others run without a problem.

Does anyone have any ideas to what might be happening here?

RE: 64 bit operating system and 32 bit programs

Didn't you expect this to happen?  I would think all sorts of things wouldn't work in the 64-bit environment, if written for the 32-bit environment (like hardware drivers, games, other programs, etc.).

Of course, I don't use or know anything about VB (yet), so maybe the obvious answer doesn't apply.

RE: 64 bit operating system and 32 bit programs

It's growing pains from the new OS, most likely.  That's one of several reasons I have recommended to our IT dept. that we not switch anyone other than "lab rats" (like me) to 64-bit machines for a while longer.

RE: 64 bit operating system and 32 bit programs

It seems a strong choice if you have the option to dual-boot, or to use another machine for everything other than SolidWorks.

I had lots of similar issues arise when I became an early user of Windows 2000.  All sorts of things became much more of a hassle than they were worth, even though some of the hardware I purchased was "compatible" with Windows 2000.

I called our VAR and they will not help me. It is not a SolidWorks issue and I agree. I have called our IT department and they have not gotten back to me yet.

To get your 32 bit executable programs to run on your new 64 bit operating system, do the following:

Find the offending program on the drive, then go into properties and set the compatibility mode to run Windows XP.

I only tested it once but it looks like it is working. I did not think of this it was our IT guy.
