How to put solid raised lettering on curved surface?

How to put solid raised lettering on curved surface?

(OP)
I would like to place raised lettering on the curved surface of a solid part. The lettering needs to be a minimal height.

It is simple to create text in a sketch, and to project this onto a curved surface using "Edit" "Project". But can this be used to create solid raised lettering?

I found a way to do this, but methinks there must be a better way.
I created the text sketch on a plane, and extruded it to the target curved surface. Then I created an offset surface from the target surface. I trimmed the offset surface to ensure that its reach was limited, then used it to cut the "excess" lettering away. So the text height is the offset value of this surface.
Works, but clunky....

Thanks justkeepgiviner

This works. It's more complicated than my earlier solution, but architecturally cleaner. Ant idea why text is disabled in this sketch mode?
