identification of materials?

(OP)
hi friends

is there any good book ,web site  explain the differnt methods to distinguish between materials and alloys by chemical testing ?

best regards

RE: identification of materials?

You can start with an internet search using Google with the phrase "positive material identification". Several web sites will pop-up describing nondestructive methods for sorting metals. A second web search can be performed using the phrase "chemical analysis of materials". You will find plenty of web sites to review.

RE: identification of materials?

Depending on trace elements limits requirements and a few light elements which cannot be analysed, for most usual situations X-Ray Fluorescence is a most practical, economic, instant results method.
Many laboratories offer this service, performed with dedicated equipment.

Have a look at the NITON gun.  We use to check our incoming materials (xray variant)

If chemical spot tests are what you're looking for, get a copy of
ASTM publication STP 550: "Nondestructive Rapid Identification of Metals and Alloys by Spot Test"

hi friends:

can any one advise  me from where i get copy of this book:

(Nondestructive Rapid Identification of Metals and Alloys by Spot Test)

is there library ?
because i contact astm they said this copy was not available .

best regards

RE: identification of materials?

Spot test is obsolete technology, not reliable.
X-Ray Fluorescence is the way to go, even by subcontracting the tests if purchasing the equipment is not warranted because of expected low usage.

RE: identification of materials?

Since My question is related I will also post here.

I have a test result on a particular piece of aluminum (X-ray spectrometer) it identifies the piece as 2024 Aluminum, with a average hardness of 79.5. How do I determine Temper from the hardness?

RE: identification of materials?

Heh, mention of the Niton X-ray Flourescence guns reminded me of a story told me by an engineer I used to work with who toured a plant in Monterrey Mexico where they make the flame arrest baffles for air bags and other similar wire products. he witnessed a guy holding a sample of wire in the palm of one hand with the gun in the other. Apparently that is how he checks all the wire to make sure the correct alloy is used in that production run. I wnder how long before the cancer starts.....
