Relocating for new job, covered costs and assistance?
Relocating for new job, covered costs and assistance?
(OP)
So I'm considering another position where I would have to relocate. Are companies not providing relocation assistance as much as in the past?
My relocation is a little over 100 miles away, so I wouldn't necessarily expect the "typical" relocation package. I know my mother had a similar relocation distance and got the 30 days temporary housing and some moving expenses. Whether you're moving a mile away or 1000 miles away, moving is a big pain and much of the work is about the same (aside from the driving distance).
I think I will send them a letter asking about this, and perhaps they will change the offer they sent me. I wonder if they will consider this a big deal on my part to bring it up. I did indicate this in the previous conversations, but perhaps they thought I would just pay for all the costs myself.

Figure out what the relocation costs.
Don't wait for them to offer, they won't necessarily do so if they don't see you having a problem, you need to make relocation an issue. Relocation shows committment, get some form of commitment from them. It isn't what they consider usual but what you consider necessary that counts. If they don't accomodate you on this, which is reasonable, then how will they be on other issues?
Either get the relocation costs or figure out what higher salary you would need to amortise your costs over a reasonable time (e.g. the minimum length of time you will stay with them... at least).
Pointless changing jobs if the increase is wiped out by relocation costs.
Rule 1 of any new job negotiation: If you don't ask you don't get
Rule two: Its a negotiation, negotiate. Even "standard terms and conditions" are negotiable.
Rule 3: get everything in writing and don't accept promises, what you get now is what you will probably always get except for "cost of living" raises. Promised reviews never happen, circumstances change.

Selling costs on old house
Buying costs on new house
Moving all household goods, including packing, storage and insurance
Four weeks accomodation in hotel or motel while you look for somewhere to rent or buy
Travel for you and family
Relocation assistant (ie somebody local who shows you round and does the tedious stuff like getting the phone connected and collecting lists from real estate people - something you'd never pay for yourself, but boy are they useful)
Things I have seen or heard of:
'Market' price for your old house (obviously not in a company that believes in capitalism)
Grant towards increased cost of new house (nice)
Grant towards cost of replacing stuff that you left behind to reduce moving costs
Orientation week or two for family

Is that for moves within Oz, or for people from the Old World moving down under? Sounds a good package either way.

The second list is a mixture of different policies. The market price one cracks me up.

RE: Relocating for new job, covered costs and assistance?
I'm going to send them a faxed letter requesting relocation expenses and call about it.
RE: Relocating for new job, covered costs and assistance?
Ask them if they want to pay/contribute and let that be a parameter in making the desition. If they think that you will say yes no matter what they answer - tehn tehy will most likely say no
