diesel generators

(OP)
My company is about to buy some second-hand diesel power generators, rated 3.2 MW at 13.8 kV, with about 24000 hours use.
Are there any standard test protocols for this type of unit?

Thanks,

Matt

RE: diesel generators

One schedule that I am aware of is a top end overhaul at 8000hr., a complete overhaul at 16,000 hr., a top end at 24,000, etc. The newer sets use a computer algorithm to determine overhaul frequency and extend the time for lightly loaded sets.
The basic check points will be the insulation resistance of the generator and, if possible, the exhaust temperature of each cilynder under load.
The overriding consideration is the fuel economy. These sets will each burn about two million gallons of fuel a year. The purchase price of older less efficient sets should and usually does reflect the increased operating cost. I have seen a purchaser go with a slightly less efficient set when it was a make that their crews were familiar with and were trained in overhaul procedures.
I hope thios is helpful even though it doesn't exactly answer your question.
respectfully

RE: diesel generators

What kind of test protocols are you looking for?
Inspection tests to determine whether you should actually buy them or performance tests to carry out once they are installed in your facility?

If it's the former I would urge you to get a full inspection carried out by an independent expert before you even consider buying them.

If it's the latter you could use the protocols set out in ISO 3046 and 8528 (I recall Waross stating the commonly used US standards in another thread if you're across there).

The issue here though is your warranty/guarantees -who is going to give you one? The OEM? What will you do if the engines fail the tests after you have bought them?

Thanks for the help. I am looking for testing before we buy and install so we'll get an independent inspector.
