Is there a way to make these settings dependant on each part you have open?
I often turn on planes on a part, then go back and forth between parts and assemblies. When I turn on the assembly, I have to turn off the mass of planes, etc. to be able to see anything.
I'd also like to be able to view a part in wireframe in one window, yet see the assembly as a solid.
Lastly, hiding items in an assembly also hides them in the drawing. We had an issue where someone printed up an assembly while I was working on it and I had a bunch of stuff hidden so i could see the internals. It caused some confusion. I'd also like to be able to look at the drawing as it is supposed to be whil working on a model with parts hidden,  as a wireframe, etc.
This seems like a lot of issues, but I've spent some time trying to figure it out, and searched around without success.

David - Have you tried setting up Layers within your assemblies?  I have some good documents on Layers I can send you or post here.  Also, you might find this config option handing if using layers.

draw_layer_overrides_model    no, yes

Directs drawing layer display setting to determine the setting of drawing model layers with the same name. If set to “yes,” implicitly includes drawing model layers in drawing layers with the same name for purposes of setting the display. If set to “no,” ignores nondrawing layers when the display status of layers is set in the drawing model.

I'll try to use layers. Honestly, I've never used them for much of anything.

Layers are key for my work.  What you can do is move any datums, gtol, and other annotations to a few layers.  Then you can turn all but those layers off.  When the part is detailed those features will be visible.  Then you can create assembly datums, csys, ect. and set those layers in the assembly.  Now when detailing the part only part datums are viewed and assembly AND part features in assembly drwings.  It also helps  to ensure that all parts, drawings, and assemblies have the same format (with respect to which features are visible).  You can also create a "start part" file that will have all these things set every time you create a new part/drawing/assembly.

Is that a hidden config or something? I entered it, and Pro/E doesn't recognize it. I shouldv'e mentioned I'm using Wildfire 2.0 also.
I'm definately going to try to implement layers in my work.
The problem is that we often pass designs between designers, and it's impossible to get everyone to use the same design practices, let alone the same config files.
They also don't want me messing with the config.pro that's on the server, so I've copied it and modified it on my local drive. So, i guess I don't know how this would work in my situation.

Yes, that config option is from 2001.  The way to standardize between designers is to develop start parts, & assemblies.  Then have standard config.pro and config.sup options so all users are playing on the same field.  This has to be done to make work flow seamless and at minimum be able to get the work completed.

That's the problem. I'm a contractor here, and even though I have some suggestions to improve things, I'm hesitant to stick my nose out for fear it may get chopped off.
We have start parts, drawing templates, etc... but they could be much better, and have many more things standardized.
For example, I start a drawing of a prt I designed, and insert a general view, it defaults to an isometric wireframe view for the first view.
The company needs a CAD administrator, but I'm not sure I should be the one to suggest it. Might look like I'm stepping on toes.
Sorry for getting off topic a bit.

If you use Layers you can use the
Save Status button in LAyer dialog to save the current layer settings as the default so your part or assembly will open with the layer settings you want applied.

Save Status was availible in 2001, I'm not sure about Wildfire though.
