HELLO

A PREFORM MADE OF FIBER, HOW CAN WE FIND THE PERCENTAGE OF POROSITY OF THE PREFORM.

THANKS

RE: PERCENTAGE OF POROSITY

you can ask the supplier?

Is there any formula to find out the percentage of porosity

thanks

RE: PERCENTAGE OF POROSITY

Porosity is generaly not defined for bare fabric/preform, but for cured composite material.  What do you want the "porosity" value for?

For infiltration study of aluminum,i have to develop some preforms. So i think that influence of the porosity of the preform will affect the composite property .

thanks

RE: PERCENTAGE OF POROSITY

The porosity of the preform is the total volume of the preform minus the fiber volume. The fiber volume is the weight of the preform divided by the fiber density.

The total volume of the preform will depend on how you process it. It will change with compaction pressure. Normally, a mold is used to shape the part, in which case, the mold volume is the total volume. If you are wicking the aluminum then get the preform volume by measuring the dimensions of the preform or envelope bag the preform and measure water displacement.
